In Orkney Series, the prints MONDAY and SUNDAY investigate the idea that all maps are subjective fictions, and use ‘edge’ lines of an Orkney survey map as a basis for exploration. There is a dynamism and depth that exists in places depicted by lines on Cartesian maps but that can only be found through direct physical engagement. While walking along these ‘lines’ in Orkney, I recorded as much detail as I possibly could using a magnifying glass – I traced details that remain infinitely hidden due to the limitations inherent in mapmaking. These recorded details then became the language and tools I used to create a series of new maps which explode and expand the edge lines traversed.
