All maps are subjective fictions. There is a dynamism and depth that exists in places depicted by lines on a Cartesian map that can only be experienced through direct physical engagement. Walking along lines that illustrate the edge between land and sea on an Orkney survey map, I documented details of the “edge line” using a magnifying glass and macro lens. Drawings of these photographs became the vernacular used to create a new series of maps of the same edge lines traversed.
