Summer art and performance series
FiveMyles Gallery, Brooklyn NY

Expanding upon the social aspects of the neighborhood stoop on a stretch of block without stoop architecture, the performance series looks back at an earlier period in Brooklyn’s history when community was built on the front steps of its many brownstones and apartment buildings. Stoop Series critiques concepts of what a "good" neighborhood might look like and expands on that idea in a "new" Brooklyn by seeking to link the old and new through play and art.

Stoop Series takes place on the front doorstep and open garage space of FiveMyles gallery. The free performance series brings together artists, poets, musicians, dancers, and storytellers, as well as children and adults of the diverse local community in an intimate and playful setting. Co-curated by poet Lynne Procope and artist Erin Gleason, Stoop Series challenges traditional notions of authentic performance, venue, and audience.

Each night begins with sidewalk games and chatter, gathering passersby and encouraging an audience of all ages to stay for and participate in the evening’s performances by artist Aisha Cousins, musician Sabrina Chap, dancer Karen Harvey, storyteller Laura Simms, poet Roger Bonair-Agard, and musicians Mark Boogie Brown & Douglas Guthrie.

Visit stoopseries.wordpress.com for more information about the performers and to share your own stoop stories and favorite sidewalk games.

Stoop Series is supported by the Brooklyn Arts Council and is fiscally sponsored by Studio Six Theatre Company. Sound and technical support are provided by Five Block Sound.
